Partnering with a more human resource

ADP ReThink Global HCM Conference Reveals Insights on How to Manage a Global Workforce

Posted by: ADP on 5 April 2016 in Multinational & Globalization

For more than 10 years, we’ve hosted our annual ADP® ReThink Global HCM Conference for top-level executives from some of the world’s largest multinational organisations. This year, more than 140 clients and prospects – representing more than seven million employees around the world – joined us to learn from their peers and industry experts, to discuss global human capital management, and to see some of our latest innovations.

It’s always interesting to observe that most attendees believe their people are their companies’ most important assets, despite whatever industry our attendees represent. And they are keenly interested in hearing about how other companies are managing the challenges of a global workforce. During this gathering, under the theme “Transform the Way the World Works,” we explored global perspectives on human capital management, and how a complex, ever-changing global environment influences how we manage those workforces.

They acknowledged that the rapid pace of change in the world is presenting them with workforce challenges they’re not fully equipped to manage. And they really appreciated the opportunity to discuss effective ways to address those challenges.

In hosting ReThink, our goal is to provide a forum where global HR leaders can share experiences and seek perspectives from their peers, as well as hear from some industry thought leaders. For instance, author and talent guru Malcolm Gladwell dispelled myths on talent recruitment and how companies can transform the talent landscape. And, fresh from the World Economic Forum® in Davos, The Huffington Post® founder, media mogul and author Arianna Huffington addressed workforce themes along with tools to enhance leader and employee performance. Additionally, several of our clients participated in a CHRO panel discussion that proposed ways to address and leverage changes in the workforce.

We also shared findings from the 2016 ADP Research Institute® Evolution of Work (1) study, a global look at 2,000 employees and employers across 13 countries. That research showed a few key trends:

  • The workplace is evolving faster than ever before;
  • There are five key themes driving global workplace change (workplace flexibility, access to real-time learning, increased autonomy, a sense of stability, and the ability to work on personally meaningful projects); and
  • Changes are perceived positively but concerns remain, while openness to workplace changes vary by region.

One revealing part of that session was the outcome of a “word cloud” we used to gauge the sentiments of our guests. A word cloud is created from an audience survey using polling devices. The result is displayed as a text graphic with the most common word written in the largest text. Interestingly, the word the majority of ReThink conferees chose was “excited,” followed by “challenged,” “motivated” and “optimistic.”

That’s an encouraging summary of ReThink’s impact. I’m pleased that ReThink continues to stimulate meaningful conversation among HR executives and gives them tangible, realistic approaches for managing the challenges of global workforces. And we’re proud that ADP is uniquely positioned to partner with them.
